On Wednesday, April 30, eleven elected officials delivered a signed letter to President Jameson of the University of Pennsylvania voicing their support for unionizing postdocs and research associates. Their letter begins:
We, as members of the Pennsylvania Senate, Pennsylvania House of Representatives, and Philadelphia City Council representing the University of Pennsylvania and part of the UPenn alumni community, are writing in strong support of the postdoctoral scholars and research associates at the University of Pennsylvania who are in the process of organizing their union with Research Associates and Postdocs United at Penn – United Auto Workers (RAPUP-UAW).
These elected officials understand the essential contributions that academic workers make to Penn and call on the university “to agree to a fair and transparent election process to ensure all workers are able to vote freely and without delay.”
